Who Was Richard Wagner?

Richard Wagner was a German composer, conductor, and director who is considered one of the most influential composers of all time. Wagner's Childhood

His mother, Johanna Rosine Wagner, remarried a year later to Ludwig Geyer, an actor and playwright. Geyer was a strong influence on Wagner, and the two of them often performed together in small theater productions.

In 1829, Wagner went to live with his brother Albert in Dresden. Albert was a student at the Dresden Conservatory, and Wagner began to study music there as well.

Wagner's Early Career

In 1833, Wagner began his career as a conductor. He worked at a number of opera houses in Germany, including the Dresden Court Opera. In 1840, he was appointed musical director of the Dresden Court Orchestra.

During this time, Wagner began to compose his first operas. His early operas were not successful, but he continued to write and compose. In 1849, he completed Lohengrin, which was his first major success.

Wagner's Middle Period

In 1850, Wagner left Dresden and went into exile in Switzerland. He lived in exile for 13 years, during which time he wrote some of his most famous operas, including Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and The Ring Cycle.

In 1864, Wagner returned to Germany and was appointed musical director of the Munich Court Opera. He remained in Munich for the rest of his life.

Wagner's Late Period

In 1876, Wagner completed his last opera, Parsifal. After Parsifal was completed, Wagner retired from composing and conducting. He died in Venice, Italy, in 1883.
